What would the cap penalty be for cutting donte whitner? is it the $833,334 signing bonus or is it his whole cap figure?

    • JUCJ85

Good question, we would save $4.1 million, and only his prorated $833,334 counts against our cap with a release.

  • http://twitter.com/LukeSwagWalker_ Derek McComiskey

With the boldin signing, revis is probably not a possibility huh

    • JUCJ85

Probably not happening right now. He wants too much money, and they(Jets) want too much in draft picks, and they wont take on salary.

  • http://twitter.com/mcmcmu mc mc

what’s the cap hit for releasing mario manningham?

    • JUCJ85

We would save $2.35 million and take dead money hit of $2.6 million. But the $2.35 million is extra cap room.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dave.spencer.94 Dave Spencer

We would trade donte whitner there’s talks a few teams want him

    • JUCJ85

      Where did you hear that?

  • PaulieC223

Why is cap listed at $127M if its set at $123M? Sorry, prolly a stupid question.

    • JUCJ85

Not a stupid question. It’s the combo of $123M cap, the carryover and credits listed.

  • sportsnut109

I thought I heard Boldin’s cap number this year was 7.5 mil

    • Modesto Matt

Ravens eat remaining signing bonus, we eat his base salary for 2013

      • JUCJ85

Correct, Modesto has it correct, Ravens eat bonus proration.

  • sportsnut109

Also what determine how much cap you can carryover per year?

    • Modesto Matt

Simply just what is left from your cap in the prior season

      • sportsnut109

Couldn’t people just keep carrying over cap space year after year. Say you had 50 million in cap space one year and apply that to the next year so you have 100 million and keep carrying it over making the cap effectively useless

        • Modesto Matt

No, because there is now a minimum spend amount. Right now you can carry over quite a bit which is why you see teams with so much. check out overthecap.com. I think you can find answers there.

You could still carryover 10% every year, the spending floor is 90% of the original cap, not a team’s adjusted cap number. You could pretty much do what sportsnut said, it would just take longer.

  • CoachB112376

How in the world does Ahmed Brooks make more than Patrick and Navorro? I thought Patrick was one of our top payed players.

    • Modesto Matt

Patrick’s future bonus money was moved into 2012 to lower his cap in 2013. He gets paid more – like $17mm last year.

  • Modesto Matt

Other sites are using a starting cap number of $123mm and this appears to be based on a starting point of $123.9mm so far as I can see. Can you explain the difference?

    • JUCJ85

I’ve changed my estimate to $123M, with the carryover and credits equaling the $127.4M cap limit.

      • Modesto Matt

        I still have a difference of about $900k using your numbers – cap= $123mm+859,734 caryover+2,643000 adjustment =$126.502mm

Our top 51 = $118.3mm + 973K dead money = $119.273mm The difference comes out to $7.2mm+ which is $900k off from your number. Sorry for my anal nature but I can’t figure where we’re different or what I’m missing

        • JUCJ85

You’re right modesto, I had the extra $900k in my calculations, I never got rid of them, so it is now corrected. And no problem with the questions, I enjoy the feedback, and people actually notice when I make a mistake.

  • Greg

What are 2013 Credits ? Never have heard of this before.

    • JUCJ85

My belief is that credits this year come from the uncapped year violations credit of $1.643M, and $1M credit from Alex Smith’s incentives not attained.

  • Modesto Matt

Jason, even though it doesn’t affect us, I’d love to see a breakdown of Goldson’s deal. Just wondering how much of that is really guaranteed and how much is in the last two years of the deal. I suspect that there was some finagling to get it over 5yrs/$40mm.

  • TC

Great Site, thanks for the info.

  • Jordan

How do the draft picks factor in – do their salaries count against the cap? What do teams like the cowboys, etc. do who are already at or over the cap? Thanks, great site!

    • JUCJ85

As of now they don’t factor. They will once draft concludes. Each team is limited amount of money to spend, determined to year 1, total and signing bonus. Usually I say 4-5 million, but we can get that later with an extension by Justin Smith if needed. Plus only the 1st 3 rounds usually count against the cap for the offseason, as the 4th-7th rounders aren’t among top 51 salaries.

      • Jason

Before the Skuta deal I looked at the top 51 salaries and what the cap numbers were last year of the players picked at our spots (31, 34, 61, 74, 93) and it would have came out to using $1.703M in extra cap space. Since then we’ve signed a few players so that figure would go down since the salaries replaced would be higher than before, but I figure that might be offset a little by a small bump in the rookie cap pool so my guess is it should be in that ball park. With players 52 and 53 and the practice squad to fit under, I figure we’ve got slightly less than $1M to play with (going off the current $4.6M figure above).

        • JUCJ85

About right. Right now $4.6M under, no pending transactions. So right now I am 100% sure it’s $4.6M under. But what you said is 100% correct. Once TC is over, and 53 man and P-Squad are complete in September, the whole team counts. I still expect a deal or 2 to free up some cap room. Maybe Justin Smith extends his contract. If so, would be great.

          • Jason

Yeah it would be nice to get something like a 2 year extension with him. It would be interesting if we are forced to use the franchise tag on him, I bet they would try to give him the DT version instead of the DE one since it’s cheaper. If they really needed the cap room for someone I am sure they could just do what a lot of the teams in the league are doing, restructure someone’s base salary into a signing bonus to lower their cap number. Someone like Ahmad Brooks who is signed for a lot of years. They could also look into doing an extension with Boldin.

  • Jason

How come there isn’t a section for incentives like there was on last year’s page?

    • JUCJ85

I decided to add the incentives for Goodwin, to a roster bonus, since it depends on his playing time. No one else has likely to be earned incentives.

  • Modesto Matt

Jason – as of 3/21/13 there appears to be a minor error ($225,415) in your cap computation. 123mm+859,734+2,643,000=126,502,734

    • JUCJ85

I have to fix that. That’s new info, the cap is the new adjusted cap, my credits were off by $225k.

  • http://twitter.com/RagvEsq Rafa

Approximately how much cap room do the 52, 53 and P-squad take up?

    • JUCJ85

Usually P-Squad is $96,900 for each player, so times that by 8, plus maybe $405,000 for each player 52 and 53, so total of $1,585,200.

  • NEBravesfan33

Haralson is $1.15 million against the salary cap per Matt Maiocco.

    • JUCJ85

That’s his base salary, he also has possible $150k in a roster bonus.

  • http://twitter.com/RagvEsq Rafa

What happens to rookies who re drafted, but don’t make the 53 man roster? Can they sign with other teams? Is their salary on the cap even if they are not in the team?

    • JUCJ85

Mostly they count only as dead money, so basically remaining prorated signing bonus. They become FAs and are free to sign with any team as long as they pass waivers.

      • http://twitter.com/RagvEsq Rafa

Thank you. BTW, what does “pass waivers” mean? (Sorry to sound ignorant.) ;-)

        • JUCJ85

Basically every player when cut must clear/past waivers, each team has a 24 hour window to claim a player, and take on that players remaining base salary, and non prorated bonuses. If clearing waivers he is free to sign anywhere, either 53 man or a practice squad. And not being ignorant, not everyone knows these type of information. That’s why I am here. I enjoy explaining this.

  • Darren

Are fifth year options allowed in the new collective bargaining agreement?

    • JUCJ85

Yes, as part of the CBA, 1st round picks get a 5th-year team option, must be picked up before the start of the new league year, after the players 3rd season. So 2014 league year for Aldon Smith, and 2015 league year for AJ Jenkins. If not picked up they become free agents. Players get a certain % of the top players at their position. Aldon would be Top 10 OLB money, AJ Top 25 WR money. Also teams can start negotiating with players who were drafted under the new CBA after year 3 of their deals. So Aldon could be extended next offseason, so we don’t see a big cap number for 2015, as he will have his option picked up.

  • http://twitter.com/RagvEsq Rafa

I read in over the cap that if the niners keep all their pics, the rookie class should cost around $7,500,000 million. I know you discussed this, but i am not clear.

Do they have to fit those $7,500,000 under the cap or do they get additional space because of the picks?

    • JUCJ85

Just an estimate, not gonna cost that much, that’s just what OverTheCap.com has for our picks in the slotting system.

  • http://twitter.com/michaelrp310 Michael

Are the Rookie Pool cap numbers for ’13 your estimation or is that what they’re set at?

    • JUCJ85

Estimate from OverTheCap.com, check the link I posted at the bottom, he has all estimates for all teams. Real good stuff.

  • Dann

When I add up the top 51 I come up with $123,177,922 vs. the $124,154,747 that you have, is there something I’m missing?

Also a point to make/remember is that if we sign the rookies only the top 5 rookies (based on the numbers provided) would fit above the top 51 for a total of $3,947,275 but we would also move 5 players below the line for a total of $2,693,625. So overall signing all 13 drafts picks without any movement (not likely) would only add an additional $1,253,650 to the cap which would still have us $364,921 under.

    • JUCJ85

Pretty much spot on Dann. We can make it happen, unsure of Davis’ new extension, he may of had help with someone restructuring their deal, or he lowered his base and helped it by converting it to a signing bonus. But we are fine, need a little help when time comes. But we are all good.

  • Rafa Gonzalez

Does anyone have an idea how many draft picks we currently have for 2014?

Also, (and I know its a little early) what is the out look for 2014 compensatory picks in view of our losses vs. our aquisitions?

    • JUCJ85

We have our own 1st-7ths, plus KCs 2nd or 3rd, plus Tennessee’s 3rd, and CAR’s 7th, so 10 right now, possibly 1 or 2 more in comp picks.
Goldson and RJF signed biggest deals, should get picks for losing them, even though we signed 4 compared to losing 5.

  • http://twitter.com/michaelrp310 Michael

Thank you for putting cap savings and dead money for each player. Do you think you could add sortable columns, too?
