49ers sign Brian Westbrook

Monday, August 16, 2010

Matt Barrows reports that the 49ers have signed veteran back Brian Westbrook to a one-year deal. The Eagles released him back in March after missing the majority of 2010 due to multiple concussions. He will be in the mix with rookie Anthony Dixon to give the team a nice trio of backs behind starter Frank Gore, and probably serve as the third down specialist due to his receiving prowess.

Update: per Jason LaCanfora, the contract is for $1.25M base with incentives that can reach up to $2.5M.

In injury news, Vernon Davis suffered a sprained knee from the Colts game and is listed as day-to-day.

Balmer traded to Seattle

Monday, August 16, 2010

Matt Barrows reports that DL Kentwan Balmer has been traded to the Seahawks. The former first round pick was selected by former 49ers GM and current Seahawks Senior Personnel Executive Scot McCloughan. Balmer, who was upset with his role on this team after showing next to nothing in two seasons, left the team and was given a "Five-day letter" giving the 49ers leverage to go after part of his signing bonus if he did not return.

Deals of the trade are not available, but we cannot imagine it to be any more than a day two pick.

Update: Matt Maiocco reported that it will be a 6th rounder.

49ers Down Colts in Indy

Sunday, August 15, 2010

The 49ers went into Indianapolis and showed promise in certain areas.

Alex Smith looked mediocre at best (3-9, 37 YDS, INT), as his interception off a near completion to Delanie Walker was his fault or not, the decision itself was extremely poor to begin with.

On the other hand, both David Carr and Nate Davis played well, helping to rally the 49ers to 34 straight points after going down 10-0 in the first quarter.

The Niners defense played very well without Patrick Willis (sat out), picking off Curtis Painter 3 times, helping to set up scores.

But in the end, the 49ers came out victorious, in a 37-17 win in Indy.

Offensive Player of the Game: Anthony Dixon carried the load and looked completely dominant, rushing for 100 yards and a TD. He really looks like a 6th-round steal.

Defensive Player of the Game: Reggie Smith, who made a key 91 yard interception return for a touchdown to spark the comeback.

Glen Coffee retires, 5-day letter sent to Balmer

Friday, August 13, 2010

According to Matt Maiocco's twitter, after missing the past two practices second-year RB Glen Coffee has announced his retirement. Strange to hear, given that he had added 10 lbs of muscle this offseason and seemed very dedicated. Will update when more news is released.

AWOL defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer is also close to off the roster as the team has sent him a "Five day letter" which states that if he does not show up within the period denoted in the letter, he will have given up his rights to certain parts of his contract and the team can go after him to recoup part of his guaranteed monies (up to 960K) paid via signing bonus.

Update: The 49ers have announced they have added WR/RS Bobby Guillory and DE/OLB Will Tukuafu.

2011 Draft Scouting Reports: Dareus, Heyward, Quinn, Clayborn, & Carter

Friday, August 13, 2010

by Jason

Lets go defensive, with Alabama 3-4 DE Marcel Dareus.

Strengths: Even with his big 306 pound frame, he has great speed, size and power, similar to a RB.

Weaknesses: Has great motor and natural ability, but needs to polish them before sundays come a knocking.

Overall: Clearly our best 3-4 DE in this class. And should be a top 5 pick in April 2011. But the ongoing investigation of a party held by an agent might hinder his status and stock.

Game to Watch: Home against Auburn(November 26th, 2010)- How will Dareus do against one of our top 8 OT's, Lee Zeimba.

Ohio State 3-4 DE Cameron Heyward.

Strengths: Can be dominate at times, consistent, and can be a 3-4 end, or even a 4-3 tackle.

Weaknesses: Even though he can be dominate, at the same time, he sometimes disappears in games.

Overall: A top notch D Lineman, but will have to work on the stuff mentoined above, if so, he will be a force to be reckoning with.

Game to Watch: Home against Miami(Fla.)(September 11th, 2010)- How will he fair against a tough Miami D-Line, that includes OG Orlando Franklin.

North Carolina 4-3 DE Robert Quinn.

Strengths: Great first step and a smart pass rusher.

Weaknesses: Even though he has the quickness and speed, he better watch out to not be overpowered by Offensive Lineman.

Overall: The clear top DE, whether 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. And our 4th Rankes player in the nation.

Games to Watch: Home against Virginia Tech(November 13th, 2010)- How will he do against our 2nd rated RB Ryan Williams. & @ Florida State(November 6th, 2010)- How will Quinn do against the likes of Rodney Hudson(Our top Rated Guard), and how many sacks will he rack up against FSU QB Christian Ponder, our 4th Rated QB.

Iowa 4-3 DE Adrian Clayborn.

Strengths: He has a great motor, great technique, great upon impact, and comes off the edge nicely.

Weaknesses: Does need to refine his pass rushing skills a bit. But thats about it.

Overall: Clearly a top 20 pick, possibly a top 10 pick come april 2011.

Game to Watch: Home against Wisconsin(October 23rd, 2010)- How will Clayborn do against our top rated Tackle, Gabe Carimi. This could be his make or break game of his season.

Now we head to the OLB spot, with North Carolina's Bruce Carter.

Strengths: Very intelligent player. Has all the skills to be the next great OLB on sundays.

Weaknesses: His main weakness may be if he is a product of the system, being from the great UNC defense.

Overall: Overall, he is among our top 5 OLB's for 2011, and should be a 1st-round pick as of now.

Game to Watch: Home against Virginia Tech(November 13th, 2010)- Lets see how Carter does when his Tar Heels take on Ryan Williams and his Hokies.

2011 Draft Scouting Reports: Ingram, Jones, Green, & Baldwin

Friday, August 13, 2010

by Jason

Now we have Alabama RB Mark Ingram.

Strengths: Good blocker, Very productive, Hard Runner.

Weaknesses: His only weak spot is his athleticism.

Overall: Clearly a top RB in April 2011 draft. Question is, can he hold up and be productive and will he be the 1st rb taken, with Ryan Williams(VA Tech) Coming on strong.

Game to Watch: Home against Ole Miss.(October 16th, 2010)- With Ingram being a hard runner, how will he do against the Rebels big NT Jerell Powe.

Alabama's WR Julio Jones.

Strengths: Has great attitude, can make any catch. Blocks well and does all the little things the right away.

Weaknesses: Only weakness is his consitency. He needs to stay on track.

Overall: If he keeps it up being consitent, then he will be great at the next level

Games to Watch: @ LSU(November 6th, 2010)- This is an ultimate test, the best WR in the class vs. the best CB in the class in LSU's Patrick Peterson. & Home against Florida(October 2nd, 2010)- Another key game, how does Jones do against top notch Safeties, Will Hill & Ahmad Black, and even CB Jenkins.

Georgia WR A.J. Green.

Strengths: Playing in a pro style offense, will only help his stock, and help him develop. So dynamic, defenses gameplan around him.

Weaknesses: Needs to become a better route technician, and run better routes. But that will come over time.

Overall: One of our top rated WR along with Alabama's Julio Jones. Has the speed, and toughness. And playing in that pro style offense will help him overall come sunday's.

Game to Watch: Vs. Florida(October 30th, 2010)- How will Green do going deep against UF's Safety tandem, Ahmad Black and Will Hill.

Pittsburgh WR Jonathan Baldwin.

Strengths: Clearly has the jump, he will go up and get the ball at any time, no matter the cost.

Weaknesses: How will he do with a new QB, now with Bill Stull gone. His size may be good, but some scouts/GMs might wonder if he has outgrown his position.

Overall: Clearly a top 5 WR, right there with Green, Jones and Floyd. We will see with a good 2010, whether he will rise up the draft boards.

Game to Watch: Home against Miami(Fla.)(September 23rd, 2010)- I pick this game, cause this should be a fun game. With Baldwin and another top notch WR, Leonard Hankerson, so we could see a very high scoring game come september 23.

2011 Draft Scouting Reports: Locker, Luck, & Mallet

Friday, August 13, 2010

by Jason

In the next few weeks, we will be doing several scouting reports of the top prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft.

Washington QB Jake Locker.

Strengths: His clear strength is his arm and mobility. He has the arm strength to be a top notch NFL Quarterback, and his mobility rivals that of Tim Tebow.

Weaknesses: Clearly, scouts and teams will wonder if the lack of top competition will or has affected his draft stock. Also, he has a tendency to make some bad throws.

Overall: Overall, He in alot of people's minds is the top QB and top rated prospect for 2011, and he is our overall #1 ranked player in the nation.

Game to Watch(2010): Home against UCLA(November 18th, 2010)- How will Locker do against the top safety prospect Rahim Moore.

Stanford QB Andrew Luck.

Strengths: Even though Locker has a better arm in a sense than Luck, you will rarely see Luck make bad throws, he is accurate and pin point.

Weaknesses: Now without Toby Gerhart as a safety blanket, how will Luck answer his criticts. Is he a one year wonder, or does he have the potential to be a franchise QB at the next level.

Overall: Luck is our clear #2 QB and #2 Prospect. He will likely battle Locker for both the top spots.

Game to Watch(2010): @ Notre Dame(September 25th, 2010)- How will Luck do against a much improved Irish Defense, with LB Brian Smith rushing Luck.

Arkansas QB Ryan Mallet

Strengths: Has a big strong arm, tall QB and very very accurate.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve his footwork and his willingness to check down. Not force the ball in.

Overall: Clearly a top 20 pick, and a top 3 QB in this draft class.

Game to Watch: Home against LSU(November 27th, 2010)- His arm may be very very accurate, but how will he do against our top rated Corner, Patrick Peterson.

McKillop, S.Long waived; B.Long, B.Davis signed

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The 49ers have made some roster moves this week.

Scott Long and recently injured Scott McKillop have been waived. Once McKillop (torn ACL) passes through waivers, he will revert to IR. In the meanwhile, pass rushers Bruce Davis and Brandon Long have been signed.

Another injury came about today, Michael Crabtree landed hard on his lower back and injured his neck after a leaping attempt for an Alex Smith duck, ending with DB Patrick Stoudamire landing on his upper back while trying to break up the catch. So far word is that he has a neck strain.

Davis, Iupati named starters; Heitmann, Brooks injured; Vann waived

Monday, August 9, 2010

According to 49ers Head Coach Mike Singletary, 2010 1st round picks Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati have been named starters on the offensive line. Davis is expected to start at right tackle, and Iupati at left guard. Iupati took over the left guard spot after David Baas went down with a concussion and has held the spot since with an impressive camp.

In addition to Davis and Iupati being named starters, the 49ers lost their starting Center when Eric Heitmann broke his left leg (left fibula) and is expected to miss about 8 weeks. Baas, the 2004 Rimington Trophy winner (awarded to college football's best center), is expected to start in his place, with competition from Tony Wragge.

From a physicality standpoint, the offensive line has actually upgraded, as Heitmann has struggled throughout his career handling bigger players in both run and pass blocking. Moving the much bigger and stronger Iupati and Baas into the lineup should theoretically give Frank Gore a nice boost in interior running. However with Iupati's inexperience and questionable pass blocking skill, Chilo Rachal's history as one of the league's worst pass blockers, and Baas playing center for the first time as a professional, it may lead to miscommunication with the QB as well as increased struggles with interior pass blocking. It does help that Baas is a very smart guy, having posted an excellent 37 Wonderlic score at the NFL Combine, and when he's been rarely healthy has typically been one of the bright spots amongst a dismal offensive line over the past 5 years.

Linebacker Ahmad Brooks will miss at least two weeks after suffering a lacerated kidney during one of the practices.

Also the 49ers have waived undrafted returner LeRoy Vann, who had struggled with handling punts early in camp but had been improving but with injuries to the offensive line and linebacker corps piling up, roster spots needed to be opened up.

Hobbes' August 4th Practice Notes

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

by Hobbes

Went to practice today, same old Smith.

He threw some ducks today, and he had a few good throws. So we can probably expect more of the same from what he did last year at best.

Nate Davis did not look very good. I was disappointed. I guess his picture playbook isn't working for him. I even spoke to one of the beat writers that I know and he said that Singletary told them that Davis is behind where they hoped he would be coming into the year. He threw at least 1 pick during practice to Ahmad Brooks, and Brooks nearly got another pick later on in practice from Davis. But Davis did have 1 nice play where he scrambled (in a game he would have been sacked like twice) and he threw like a 50 yard bomb down the right sideline in the wind to one of the scrub receivers who got interferred with but still caught it.

Dixon looks like a beast. He hits the hole hard and has a nice initial burst.

Vernon was beasting too. As was Crabtree. Crabs looks like he's ready to break out this year, he was really smooth in and out of his breaks and he made a lot of nice plays and pulled a Jerry every time he caught it by running to the endzone.

Wasn't really too impressed with what I saw out of Anthony Davis. He looked kinda slow out there. Iupati looks good though, so does De La Puente.

Another guy that impressed me was WR Bakari Grant. He's got nice size at 6'3 and pretty good speed. Also seemed to catch everything thrown his way too.

Scot McKillop got injured too on a play. He was down for like 5 minutes and had to be taken away on a stretcher. Not sure if it was his knee or not. The beat writer told me it might have been his ankle.

The pass rush seemed to get a lot of good pressure in the drills, so that was encouraging. But that might also mean our Oline still sucks.

And Brian Jennings FTW! During the warmups and stretching he was cracking jokes with the crowd and responding to anyone who talked to him, it was pretty cool.
